Stop Lying to Yourself in Order to Reach Your Goals
Aug 24, 2018There is a very interesting aspect to your brain.
The main job of this aspect is to protect you. To keep you nice and cozy inside of your comfort zone.
Any time you think or take action outside of what’s familiar, this aspect of your brain says,
“Whoa Whoa Whoa!!! Hold on and STOP! This is new. And different. And I DON’T LIKE IT!”
And let me tell you, this part of your brain is sneaky, and powerful and always on the lookout for any hint of progress or new-ness in your life.
If left unchecked, this part of your brain will keep you from reaching your goals.
This part of your brain whispers lies to you and convinces you to…
…stop taking action
…stop making progress
…take a nap
…eat foods that you know aren’t in alignment with your intentions
If you don’t learn to recognize this aspect, you will continue believing all kinds of lies that prevent you from becoming better.
If you’re goal is to be better, stronger, fitter, happier, or leaner, it’s super important that you learn to wrangle this aspect of your brain.
This week I’m asking you to challenge all of the lies that you might be telling yourself, or believing, that keep you from reaching your fullest potential.
This Week’s Exclusive Content
Let’s get really clear on some of the stories that you might be telling yourself that simply aren’t true. Right now, I want you to think of specific goal that you have. Do you…
Want to become more fit?
Lose 5 lbs?
Run your next race faster?
Increase the weight of your Deadlift (safely, of course!)?
I want you to grab a piece of paper and write out your specific goal. Then, I want you to write out the specific ideas (or beliefs) that you have about reaching that goal. Write out anything and everything that comes to mind.
Now, I want you to close your eyes and feel into this goal. Is there a small part of you that worries you might not be able to achieve it? Is there a hint of doubt in your tummy that is sending the message that you won’t be able to reach your goal?
I want you to search deep for ANY thoughts, feelings or beliefs that send the message of “You can’t reach this goal.”
And then I want you to ask yourself,
Is that REALLY true?
Are you absolutely CERTAIN that it isn’t true?
What PROOF do you have that it is absolutely impossible to reach that goal?
Because the TRUTH is…
…that nearly every goal is achievable.
…that you are far more capable than you know.
…that you have the power to override the nay-sayin aspect of your brain and WIN!
Now, on that same piece of paper where you wrote your goals, write out 3-5 statements that reflect the TRUTH and empower you to take action! For example…
“I realize it might be hard work, but I have the ability and the skills to take off these 5 lbs.”
“I am a work in progress, and each week I can train smarter and create a stronger body that is even more resilient.”
“My body has achieved incredible things in the past, and I can do it again. I might not be “there” just yet, but I can keep moving forward and reach my goals.”
Make it a daily practice to watch your thoughts and feelings for any stories or beliefs that are simply not true. Once you learn to spot the lies, you’ll be armed with incredible ability to achieve nearly ANY goal in life.
