In past email updates I have covered the topic of eating around workouts numerous times. We’ve talked about how to eat before and after, and some good options for fuel.

Today I want to share exactly what NOT to eat before your workout. Because what you eat will make – or break – your next sweat sesh big time.

I remember back to my mid-twenties when I desperately wanted to be lean. In an effort to “eat light and low fat” I would eat a salad before going for a long run in Central Park. Lemmetellya, I learned very quickly that salads are great if you want side cramps, terrible gas pains, and legs that feel like cement bricks. Clearly, a salad is not an ideal pre-workout meal.

    Thanks for the video, Holly! I usually eat avocado toast because avocados tend to make me feel full for a sustained amount of time but after watching your video I realize they are also high in fat which is hard to digest so I am re thinking this strategy. What SHOULD we be eating? Simple carbs and natural sugars like fruit? Bananas?

    Hi Holly, thanks for the tips on what to eat before a workout. I’m guilty for not paying attention to what I eat before working out (I usually think only about what to eat after it). I’ve never eaten salad before a workout, didn’t know that it would make you feel sluggish.

    Prefer early breakfast of small serving of oatmeal or blueberry whole grain waffle. Workout two hours later..then some protein.

    #5 Food not to eat before a workout. Xmas cake?. A very small piece an hour and half before my cardio sesh yesterday did not yield great results! Distances, times, everything, reduced by around 20%. I learned my lesson. ?

    I find that 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt and a banana about 30 minutes before my workout fuels my workout without any heavy feeling 🙂
